ESAU AND SALVATION

Esau, born red and named Edom, traded his birthright for stew, scorning YaHU’aH’s promises. “And Esau said, ‘Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?’” (Bereshith 25:32). His decision birthed the Edomites, settling in the rugged lands of Seir, south of Yashar’al. Esau’s marriages to Adah and Aholibamah deeply grieved Yitsaq and Rivqah, blending his seed with non-covenant Hittite tribes. “And Esau… took as wives Judith… and they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah” (Bereshith 26:34–35).

Esau’s descendants—Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jalam, and Korah—became progenitors of prominent Edomite clans, including Teman and Amalek. Despite the rebellion and straying of his lineage, YaHU’aH’s mercy remains extended to any willing to repent. “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to YaHU’aH, and He will have mercy on him” (YeshaYahu 55:7). Esau’s seed, from ancient Seir to scattered Europe, can yet seize Tzedeqah (Righteousness).

The early Edomite kings ruled autonomously even before Yashar’al’s monarchy was established. “These were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Yashar’al” (Bereshith 36:31). Esau’s marriage to Ishmaelite Basemath deepened the distance between his line and Yashar’al, spreading Edom’s influence through copper mining and trade routes to Arabia. During the 6th century BCE, many Edomites migrated into Idumea, eventually becoming absorbed into the Yahudyim community under the Hasmonean ruler John Hyrcanus. This complex merging laid the foundation for Herod the Great, an Idumean by descent, to ascend under Roman rule. Yet despite these long-standing tensions, YaHU’aH’s instructions for kinship and mercy never changed: “You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother” (Debarim 23:7).

Edom’s later alliance with Yashar’al is seen when King Jehoshaphat joined forces with Edom and Yashar’al to battle against Moab and Ammon. “So the king of Yashar’al went with the king of Yahudah and the king of Edom; and they marched on that roundabout route seven days” (2 Melakim 3:9). Herod’s later reign under Roman authority illustrates how Edom became entangled with the empire that shaped Christian Europe. Job confessed humbly, “Then Job answered YaHU’aH and said: ‘Indeed I know that You can do everything… I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know’” (Iyob 42:3). The restoration of Job, after his complete surrender to YaHU’aH, remains a testimony that salvation and favor are not earned by deeds but granted by AL’uah’s mercy. “There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared AL’uah and shunned evil” (Iyob 1:1).

His story echoes for the seed of Esau from Rome to Europe and beyond. Even now, in 2025, YaHU’aH calls Esau’s scattered descendants to forsake self-reliance and humble themselves before AL Alyon (Most High AL). Redemption and restoration await those who trust in His Amat (Truth) and grace.

Cornelius’s prayers and alms rose as a memorial before YaHU’aH, proving that sincere seeking is never ignored by the Most High.

Will you doubt YaHU’aH’s call to those considered outsiders? “Then Kĕpha opened his mouth and said: ‘In truth I perceive that AL’uah shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him’” (Ma’aseh 10:34-35). The Ruach Qodash (Set-apart Breath) fell upon Cornelius and his household, confirming that the door of the B’rit (Covenant) is open to all nations through YAHUSHA.

Cornelius’s story echoes through the generations, offering hope to Esau’s heirs and all scattered peoples. From Rome to modern Europe, the gentiles can yet seize salvation through repentance and belief. The same call stands now in 2025: return, believe, and be restored into the covenant family of YaHU’aH.

Edom’s legacy, from the days of Herod’s corrupted rule to the heights of Christian Europe, is steeped in both triumph and failure. “Narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Mattithyahu 7:14). Rabbinic claims tying Edom as Rome’s heir only fueled division, yet the scripture speaks unity and restoration. Why remain bound by lies when YaHU’aH offers eternal life through covenant obedience? Europe’s nations, shaped by Christian tradition, carry Edom’s distant echo—a prophetic reminder of their place within salvation history.
